Winter in the Limousin
Frosty fields, Christmas markets and truffle fairs: our guide to the quiet months around Le Dorat, when the Limousin shows its softest side.

Autumn is slipping away here and the first wood smoke is drifting over the rooftops. Some people think the Limousin closes for winter. We think the opposite. The crowds are gone, the light is low and golden, the lanes fall quiet, and the region settles into its cosiest season. Here is how we like to fill the short days.
Walking in the frost
The countryside barely pauses. The Monts de Blond, about half an hour away, are laced with waymarked trails that wind past granite boulders and ancient dolmens, including the Rocher des Fées, the rock of the fairies. On a crisp morning, with frost on the heath and Limousin cattle steaming in the fields, it is one of the loveliest walks in France.
Further afield, the 19 km loop around Mont Gargan near La Croisille-sur-Briance climbs to a wide, wintry panorama. And closer to home, the paths around Lac de Saint-Pardoux, roughly 35 minutes away, circle 330 hectares of still water that mirror the bare trees. Wrap up, walk slowly, and reward yourselves with a long lunch.
If the snow comes
It does not fall every year, but when it does the Plateau de Millevaches, about two hours south, turns into a little winter wonderland. There you can try cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or even dog sledding near Saint-Setiers when the white stuff allows. It is snow dependent, so check the forecast, but it makes a memorable day trip through empty, glittering countryside.
Christmas markets
Limoges hosts the biggest in the region: from 27 November to 27 December 2026 its squares fill with more than 60 wooden chalets, light shows and an ice rink, about 50 minutes from Le Dorat. Closer to home, Bellac holds its traditional market on 11 and 12 December, complete with local folklore groups, and Le Dorat hosts an autumn market of toys and second-hand treasures under the Halle aux Grains on 25 October.
If antiques are your thing year round, the Puces de la Cité flea market in Limoges unrolls on the second Sunday of every month.
Truffles, foie gras and foires grasses
Winter is eating season in the Limousin. Around Sorges, the truffle capital of the Périgord Vert, about an hour and a half away, producers sell black truffles from baskets every Sunday through the deepest winter months. And in Brive-la-Gaillarde the famous foires grasses run from 21 November to early March, with their Foire des Rois on 9 January 2027, where duck, goose and foie gras come straight from the farm gates.
Then come home
There is no better end to a cold day than slipping into the warm jacuzzi under the winter stars, glass in hand, with the gas stove glowing inside. The house is built for exactly this season. Pick your dates and come and disappear for a while.
